Hindu devotion or worship ceremony or act known as Puja can be best described as a sacred act. It is a way of approaching the Lord and asking for his favor and thankfulness. If it is your first time attempting Hindu rituals or you have been a practitioner for many years this guide will guide you through the form of puja with dignity and accuracy. ✨🔷

What is Puja?
The term Puja has come from Sanskrit language of India and means worship or reverence. It also includes gifts presented to the spirit beings and called prayers, hymns or invocation alongside other objects. There are everyday puja, occasion based puja, festival based puja and so on. It is a very private and religious experience by which people find solace, guidance, and, in my opinion, God. 🕉️🌟
The Significance of Puja
Puja has a great Culture & religious value. It is not just a ritual but a way to:
- Connect with the Divine: Build a very direct link with the deity. ☀️
- Seek Blessings: For intercessory pray, this is where you ask for anything from guidance, protection, blessings amongst others.
- Express Gratitude: Give thanks for the things that one has been granted. 😊
- Purify the Mind and Soul: Get rid of negative vibes and promote positivity. 🧘♀️
Preparing for Puja
Timing the Event and Venue Selection
- Time: Puja can be performed at any time of the day; most preferred and considered proper are morning and evening. ⏰
- Place: Tidy the area where you print, ensure it do not produce noise and should be treated as a sacred place for puja. This can be a prayer room or an altar at your house. 🏠
Gathering Puja Items
For puja, gather the things you need to have around. These may include:
- Idol or Photo of the Deity: The deity on whom the whole of the puja is centered.
- Incense Sticks (Agarbatti): For blowing air, and making the air fresh so that it spreads a nice smell in the atmosphere. 🍃
- Lamp (Diya): To signify enlightenment and knowledge. 🕯️
- Flowers: For beauty and love, in this case. 💐
- Fruits and Sweets (Prasad): To be given to the deity and then shared. 🍎🍬
- Water (Jal): To be used for purification and offerings. 🚰
- Bell (Ghanta): This is to call on the deity and to produce a sound tha makes everything holy. Ringing a bell.
- Tulsi Leaves: Said to have divine properties and usually applied for use during puja. 🍃
- Kumkum (Vermilion): For applying a tilak on the forehead. 🔴
- Camphor (Kapoor): For the final aarti. 🔥
Performing Puja: Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Purification
- Cleanse Yourself: It is good to take a bath or even wash your hands and feet before starting the puja. 😊
- Purify the Puja Space: Sweep water ( preferably holy water/ Ganga Jal) around the area of puja. 💦
Step 2: Invocation
- Light the Lamp: Pride the diya to wake the god. 🔅
- Ring the Bell: Ring the bell at the start of the puja and also to call the Deity. Gong
Step 3: Offerings
- Offer Water: Wash the idol or photo of the deity with water in order to sanctify it.
- Offer Flowers: Offer flowers at the feet of the deity what you are ready to devote yourself to. 🌺
- Offer Incense: Small incense stick and sways it in circular manner towards the idol. 🍃
- Offer Fruits and Sweets: Put the prasad in front of the deity. apple candy🍎🍬
Step 4: Chanting and Prayers
- Chant Mantras: Chant special prayers relative to the god you want to appease. For example “Om Namah Shivaya” for God Shiva or “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” for Lord Krishna. 🕉️🗣️
- Recite Prayers: Bless yourself by offering sincere prayers. ☪
Step 5: Aarti
- Perform Aarti: Stand with one hand on your opposite shoulder and the other on your opposite hip and rotate while swinging a lit camphor or diya above the deity while reciting the aarti. This is the climax of the prayers. 🔥🕯️
Step 6: Conclusion
- Distribute Prasad: Give the blessed prasadam to all present or distribute to the congregation. apple candy
- Apply Tilak: You should put a tilak on your forehead using kumkum. 🔴
- Bow Down: Bow down before the idol to express ones reverence to the deity. 🙂

- Stay Present: Concentrate on the puja, the god, the goddess, or the god and the goddess. Avoid distractions. 🧘♀️
